A Summer of Connection: Free Activities Supporting Brentwood's Young People Across Brentwood
This summer (2026), Arise Brentwood delivered free activities for hundreds of Essex young people, creating safe spaces to build friendships, learn new skills and connect with support. Reaching 347 young people, including 238 who were new to us, the project demonstrated the value of youth support in Brentwood and community-based engagement.

Creating Positive Opportunities for Young People
This summer, Arise Brentwood brought together young people from across the Brentwood community through a programme of free activities designed to help them stay active, build confidence and feel connected during the school holidays.
Running throughout August, the project offered a variety of activities for teens in Brentwood, including sports, skateboarding, BMX riding, scooting, street art workshops, games, food and informal support from experienced youth workers.
Our aim was simple: to create welcoming spaces where young people could meet friends, try something new and access positive support close to home.
Reaching More Young People Than Ever
Across the month, 347 young people took part in sessions held at Doddinghurst Playing Fields, King George's Playing Fields, Café A'Moore and through detached youth work sessions across the town.
The most significant outcome was the number of young people we connected with for the very first time. Of the 347 participants, 238 had not previously engaged with Arise Brentwood.
That means nearly 70% of those who attended were new to our organisation, demonstrating how accessible community-based activities can help expand opportunities for Essex young people who may not otherwise know where to find support.
For us, success is not just about attendance. It is about building trusted relationships that can lead to longer-term engagement, personal development and access to ongoing support when needed.
More Than Activities
Alongside sports, creative sessions and social opportunities, young people also engaged in meaningful conversations with our team and volunteers.
Topics ranged from education, life skills and employment to friendships, family relationships, mental health, emotions, healthy lifestyles and community involvement.
These conversations are often where some of the most important work happens. By being present in the community, our team can offer encouragement, signpost support and create opportunities for young people to feel heard and valued.
A Conversation That Made a Difference
One memorable moment came during a café outreach session when a young person approached the team to ask who we were and what we do.
As the conversation developed, they felt comfortable sharing some of the challenges they were facing, including their mental health and experiences with education. One of our volunteers took time to listen, offer encouragement and provide information about additional support available locally.
The young person later expressed an interest in attending our weekly youth club, showing how a simple conversation can become the start of an ongoing supportive relationship.
Adapting to Challenges
Like many outdoor programmes, the project was not without challenges. Poor weather occasionally affected sessions, including periods of heavy rainfall that left outdoor spaces difficult to use.
However, staff and volunteers adapted quickly, making activities safe where possible and ensuring sessions could continue. The experience has also provided valuable learning as we continue to strengthen promotion through local schools, community networks and social media.
Thank You to Our Volunteers
None of this would have been possible without our incredible volunteers.
Their time, energy and commitment helped create welcoming environments where young people could feel safe, supported and encouraged. Whether helping at events, engaging in conversations or supporting activities, they played an essential role throughout the summer.
Looking Ahead
The summer project highlighted the ongoing need for accessible youth support in Brentwood and the positive impact that community-based provision can have on young people's lives.
As Arise Brentwood looks ahead, we are encouraged by the relationships formed, the confidence developed and the many new connections made across the Brentwood community. We look forward to continuing to support Essex young people through opportunities that help them thrive, connect and realise their potential.
