Volunteer Position: Treasurer (Trustee)

Job Purpose
The Treasurer of Arise Brentwood is a key Trustee responsible for providing financial oversight, guidance, and assurance to the board. Alongside fulfilling the general duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer ensures the charity’s financial integrity, sustainability, and compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements. The role supports strategic decision-making by presenting clear financial information, overseeing budgets and accounts, and advising the board on financial matters, while working closely with the CEO and external advisors to ensure effective stewardship of the organisation’s resources in pursuit of its charitable objectives.
General Responsibilities as a Trustee
Ensure that the Charity complies with its governing documents, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
Ensure that the Charity pursues its objects as defined in its governing document
Ensure that the Charity applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects, i.e. it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be
Contribute actively to the board of trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the Charity, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
Safeguard the good name and values of the Charity
Ensure the financial stability of the Charity
Protect and manage the property of The Charity, and to ensure that proper investment of The Charity's funds
Along with other Trustees, appoint and support the Chief Executive Officer and monitor their performance.
Main Responsibilities of the Treasurer
Presenting monthly financial reports to the board in a format that helps the board understand the charity’s current and future financial position
Advising the board on how to carry out its financial responsibilities
Liaising with professional advisors, e.g. Accountants, Insurance Brokers
Liaising with the wider team, e.g., Bookkeeper, Payroll, and Ext. Accountants
Overseeing the preparation and scrutiny of annual accounts
Provision and monitoring of financial budgets
Ensuring the financial records of The Charity are well-maintained
Ensuring financial and tax returns are made to the relevant authorities
General Qualities of a Trustee
Integrity, impartiality, strategic vision, good/independent judgement and decision making.
Tact and diplomacy.
Willingness to speak one’s mind and listen to the views of others.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
Understanding of and adherence to the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee.
Qualities of a Treasurer
Commitment to the organisation and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as Treasurer.
Have a financial qualification or relevant experience
Have an orderly mind and methodical way of thinking, with attention to detail
Feel comfortable working with figures
Ability and willingness to clearly communicate and explain financial matters
Desirable experience
Prior experience in committee/trustee/treasurer work.
Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation.
A wider involvement with the voluntary sector.
Time Commitment
The Board of Trustees meets quarterly – 3 hr meeting inc. pre-reading of papers.
To prepare a finance report for the trustees' meeting
To provide updates, support and guidance to the CEO monthly
To meet with Trustees, the CEO and employees when necessary
To fulfil commitments of the Treasurer’s role as outlined above
Work in collaboration with the wider finance team to achieve objectives
We would foresee weekly hours of work ranging from 4 to 6 hours per week
We are a new Charity currently in an embryonic phase, therefore requiring initial additional work, hence the high expectation of time. We envisage this will reduce as the charity settles into a rhythm.
This position is not remunerated, but reasonable expenses incurred while fulfilling the duties of the role are reimbursed.
